RON WIKSO BEATS ON SPIRIT DIGITAL 328

ROCKLIN, California -- Ron Wikso, best known as the drummer from Foreigner and a top-rate session musician, recently added a Spirit Digital 328 to his Canyon Country, California-based home studio and production company, "2 Guyz & a Fader".

Wikso acquired the Digital 328 in February and is currently using it to record several Los Angeles-area bands, as well as to add live drum tracks to various independent albums, commercial jingles and other recordings. He and Dave Amato, the guitar player for REO Speedwagon, also plan to soon begin recording their new album together on the Spirit with the assistance of a number of special guests, including members of Bon Jovi, Foreigner, Journey, Santana and REO Speedwagon.

"I’m really thrilled with the way the 328 sounds," says Wikso. "The mic pres and converters are all really clean. With my previous console, a Spirit 24 Auto, I was using external mic pres, but the 328’s pres sound so good that I’m just using them. I also love the Lexicon effects, which are really nice. Aside from its sound, the desk is really user-friendly. The way it’s laid out makes sense, making it relatively easy to go from an analog console to a digital one. I was up and running in a very short period of time."

"I also like the routing aspects of the 328," adds Wikso. "I have one particular microphone, an EV RE2000, that I use for a lot of different things, like vocals, acoustic guitars and harmonica. Using the routing functions of the console, I can leave the mic plugged into one channel and send its signal to any of the tape channels. Before, I had to do everything in my patch bay, so it’s cool to be able to do all that with a button. Also, the 328’s automation is awesome. It’s so much less stressful than sitting on an analog board and having to manually make all of the adjustments. You’d need six guys standing around the board. With the 328, you can make a record that sounds just about as good as you could at a big studio for a lot less money."

The Spirit Digital 328 is being used in conjunction with an external PC equipped with a Creamware T DAT 16 hard disk system and Sonorous sound card. Wikso also utilizes an Alesis ADAT XT when ready to mix, as well as a pair of Tannoy 6.5PBM monitors for critical listening.

Wikso’s bio is impressive, having toured and recorded with a number of high-profile artists, including Cher, David Lee Roth, Foreigner, Richie Sambora and The Storm. He has also performed on countless soundtracks, jingles and other recordings as a session drummer.

Spirit is a British console and monitor line manufactured in the U.K. by Soundcraft and distributed in the U.S. by Spirit By Soundcraft, Inc., a subsidiary of Harman International.
